The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Teams are some of the busiest in the nation, and respond to hundreds of callouts each year from a total of eight search and rescue (SAR) teams. These teams are made up primarily of volunteer reserve deputies and civilian volunteers, and are supervised by LA County sheriff’s deputies. All LASD SAR teams are certified by the Mountain Rescue Association, and are highly trained in technical rope rescue, swift water, snow and ice operations, search theory, and tracking. Team members are also required to hold a medical certification of EMT or higher.

The fictional teams of Chumash SAR and Palomino Highlands SAR are highly capable volunteer teams that operate under the Los Santos County Sheriff’s Department. These teams are based loosely on Malibu SAR and Santa Clarita Valley SAR, with the vehicles being based on the wide variety of SAR vehicles operated by LASD. These vehicles carry team members as well as the gear necessary to perform search and rescue operations in a wide array of environments. These teams have the ability to respond to mutual aid calls throughout Southern San Andreas based upon requests by the San Andreas Office of Emergency Services (San OES), such as Blaine County and within Senora National Park. These teams also frequently train and operate with units such as Los Santos County Fire, US Forest Service, and the Los Santos County Sheriff’s Aero Bureau & Special Enforcement Bureau.
